Creation and destruction of value

For the majority of the workshops in GDES4003 we had to explore the idea of creating new value or meaning to our seemingly useless items.

One of the exercises was to use imagery of our objects and manipulate them using a range of different techniques and processes, this could be up to our interpretation of what a manipulation but we were highly encourage to experiment with cut out, digital manipulation and cut and paste collaging.

A cut out manipulation of my object, as part of our object-photo-object workshop

I really enjoyed the freedom of this exercise, fully allowing ourselves to see how simple techniques such as screwing up or removing portions of an image can create new narratives and themes. As my object was very quirky and goofy I had lots of potential to change that ideology of ‘her’ and try create her persona or backstory in a new light.

Random arrangement, using a cut out method.

By doing so we automatically created new value to these ‘ugly’ objects. The process of adding or subtracting elements gives a special quality to an image.
