Ruben Pater’s CAPS LOCK further reading summary

CAPS LOCK is a book by Ruben Pater that retraces the relations between graphic design and capitalism. It is an inspirational book full of sources for design students, educators, and visual communicators all over the world. These are just a few of my notes:

  • The book uses clear language and interesting visual examples to show how graphic design and capitalism are linked.
  • It’s quite visual but not too much that it’s overwhelming and unacademic – even the type is used in such a way that it can be used as a visual comm, some text is highlighted or bolder to give emphasis.
  • Good use of colour accents throughout -tying it all together and keeping it consistent.
  • Good balance of imagery and text in an interesting and graphic layout.
  • Using media from different decades and sources – keeping it engaging and intriguing.
  • The text is very complimentary to the visual.
  • Each chapter is divided into bitesize articles with stimulating and coherent examples of design.
